Fireboy and Watergirl in the Forest Temple is a cooperative puzzle-platform game built around controlling two characters with opposite elemental properties. There is no story-driven campaign with dialogue or cutscenes; the objective is to guide Fireboy and Watergirl through the Forest Temple and reach their separate exit doors. The game contains 32 single-screen levels that become more complicated as new puzzles and hazards are introduced.

Two Characters, Different Rules

Fireboy can safely move through fire and lava but is defeated by water. Watergirl can cross water but cannot touch fire. Green liquid is dangerous to both characters, and if either one dies, the level must be restarted. Their different abilities mean that one character can often reach switches, platforms, or areas that are inaccessible to the other.

Solving the Temple Puzzles

Each level combines platforming with environmental puzzles. Players encounter levers, pressure buttons, movable boxes, elevators, fans, platforms, and other mechanisms that change the available route. Some puzzles require one character to stand on a switch while the other passes through a gate, while others are designed around moving both characters at the same time.

The main tasks include:

·         collecting red diamonds with Fireboy;

·         collecting blue diamonds with Watergirl;

·         avoiding green liquid with both characters;

·         activating buttons and levers;

·         moving boxes to reach higher platforms;

·         bringing both characters to their matching exits.

Diamonds are usually optional but improve the level result, while certain special stages require a particular diamond before completion. The 32 stages include normal puzzle levels, simultaneous levels designed around coordinated movement, and special diamond levels. Playing alone means controlling both characters yourself, but two players can also divide the controls and cooperate.

Controls and Level Completion

Fireboy is controlled with the Arrow keys, while Watergirl uses A and D to move and W to jump. Both can move at the same time, which is useful in levels where actions must be synchronized. A stage is completed only after both characters reach their corresponding doors, so getting one hero to the exit is not enough. Progress depends on planning routes, understanding which hazards each character can cross, and coordinating their movements through increasingly difficult temple puzzles.
