Gladihoppers is a 2D physics-based fighting game about gladiators competing in arena battles. Instead of following a long story campaign, the game focuses on combat, equipment, and several separate modes. Fighters come from four groups associated with the Roman era: Romans, Gauls, Nubians, and Egyptians. Players can customize their gladiator with different weapons, armor pieces, helmets, shields, gloves, shoes, and other equipment before entering battle.
Learning the Combat System
Fights combine regular animation with physics-based movement. Each gladiator can switch between two combat stances, and every stance provides directional attacks with different speed and power. Players can move around the arena, attack from different angles, block incoming strikes, and use ranged weapons such as javelins. Individual body parts have separate hitboxes, so the location of an attack can affect how much damage is dealt and how the opponent reacts.
Choosing a Game Mode
Gladihoppers offers several ways to fight. Career mode focuses on developing a gladiator through repeated battles, while Save the Emperor works as an arcade mode with an extended sequence of fights. Spartacus’ War adds a strategy layer with factions, armies, and towns that can be conquered. Quick Fight is designed for short custom or randomized matches, and multiplayer allows battles against another player.
The main gameplay includes:
- switching between two fighting stances;
- performing directional melee attacks;
- blocking and controlling distance;
- throwing javelins at opponents;
- equipping swords, axes, maces, shields, and armor;
- progressing through Career mode;
- fighting locally or through online multiplayer.
Equipment is an important part of preparation. Gladihoppers includes more than 100 items across its current versions, allowing players to change both weapons and protection. Different combinations affect how a gladiator approaches a fight, while Career mode gives equipment and tactical decisions a longer-term purpose. Quick Fight can also be used to experiment with different setups without following the full career structure.
Fighting in Different Arenas
Battles take place across seven arenas: the Colosseum, Aegyptus, Macedonia, Gallia, Hispania, the Ludus, and the Palace. These locations act as combat stages rather than exploration levels. The objective remains to defeat the opposing gladiator or team by using movement, timing, weapon range, and defensive actions effectively. Progress depends on the selected mode, with Career focused on building a fighter, Spartacus’ War on conquest, and arcade or multiplayer modes centered on repeated combat.
